How to Take A Screenshot On Mac

There are times when you need to take a screenshot on Mac, it could be when you have to report a software bug, threaded web conversations, an important pop-up or it even can be a payment receipt required for the records. There are several methods available to you for taking the screenshot on Mac computer running OS X or macOS operating systems.

Capture The Entire Screen

In macOS Mojave

If you want to capture the entire screen on your mac follows the steps given below-:

Step1 : To see the onscreen capture control press Shift-command-5 on your keyboard.

Step2 : Now in the onscreen control-click on the option capture entire screen. you will see your pointer changes to a camera.

Step3 : Now to capture the screen of that display click anywhere on the screen or you can even do this by clicking capture available in the onscreen control to capture the screen of every display.

Step4 : In the corner of your screen, you see a thumbnail of the screenshot. The screenshot can now be found on your desktop.

  1. To capture the screen of every display press shift-command-3
  2. Now you can find the screenshot on your display.

Capture A Window

In macOS Mojave

  1. To see the onscreen capture controls on your keyboard press Shift-command-5
  2. Your pointer will change to the camera once you select capture selected window from the options in onscreen control
  3. To capture the window click on it (To exclude the shadow of the window’s from the screenshot, press and hold the option ~- key when you click)
  4. In the corner of your screen, you can find a thumbnail of the screenshot. You can edit the screenshot, move it or take other options from the thumbnail or you can even wait for the screenshot to appear on your desktop.

  1. On the keyboard press Shift-command-4
  2. The pointer will change to the camera once you click on the space bar.
  3. For capturing a window click on the window
  4. You can now find the screenshot on your desktop

Capture A Selected Portion Of The Screen

In macOS Mojave

  1. To see the onscreen capture controls on your keyboard press Shift-command-5
  2. In the onscreen controls click on capture selected portion
  3. Now drag for selecting the area of the screen to be captured. For moving the entire selection drag from within the selection.
  4. Now in the onscreen controls click capture
  5. In the corner of your screen will appear a brief thumbnail of the screenshot. You can edit the screenshot, move it or take other options from the thumbnail or you can even wait for the screenshot to appear on your desktop.

For all the versions of macOS

  1. On your keyboard press Shift-command-4
  2. To capture drag the selected area of the screen
  3. You can find your screenshot on your desktop once you release your mouse or trackpad button

Capture A Menu

In macOS Mojave

  1. To reveal the content of the menu click on the menu
  2. To capture the menu click on the option capture the entire screen or capture a window or capture portion of the screen that includes the menu for screenshot

For All The Versions Of macOS

  1. To reveal the content of the menu click on the menu
  2. On your keyboard press Shift-command-4
  3. Now to capture drag to select the area of the menu and then to capture that area release your mouse or trackpad button
  4. Alternatively, you can press space bar and your pointer will change to a camera and now click on the menu to capture

Capture The Touch Bar

On your keyboard press Shift-command-6, if you have a Mac with a touch bar and macOS Sierra 10.12.2 or later for capturing what is currently displayed on the touch bar. You can now find the screenshot on your desktop.

To include a screenshot button, you can customize the control strip region of your touch bar.

How To Use The Screenshot Thumbnail

In the lower-right corner of your screen appears a thumbnail of the screenshot when you take one.

  1. No actions are required to be taken or swipe the thumbnail to the right: the screenshots automatically gets saved to the chosen save location, which is the desktop
  2. To choose more actions like change the default save location, delete the screenshot without saving it or open the screenshot in an app, control-click the thumbnail
  3. To move the screenshot drag the thumbnail to save the screenshot on another location like document, an email, the trash or a finder window
  4. To open the screenshot click on the thumbnail. You can also use the markup tools in the toolbar to use options like crop, rotate, annotate and perform other editing actions. For sharing the screenshot click on the share button
  5. If you don’t wish to see the thumbnail click Options in the onscreen controls, and then for changing the setting use the option “show floating thumbnail

  1. The screenshots by default are saved with the name “Screenshot date at time.png
  2. To cancel the screenshot, on your keyboard press the ESC key before clicking to capture
  3. To store the screenshot instead of saving it in the clipboard press and hold the control key while you click to capture. Now the screenshot can be pasted into document, message or other location. To paste it on another Apple device you can use universal clipboard
  4. The screenshot can be opened with options like preview, safari or even with other apps that edit or view images. Screenshot can be exported to different formats from preview like JPEG, TIFF or PDF.
  5. Some apps (DVD player) does not allow you to take screenshots of their windows
  6. The screenshot app is provided in macOS Mojave for screenshot control which is present in the utility folder of your application folder.
